Yorkshire Area Point-to-Point Club
Sheriff Hutton
Sunday 30th January 2011
by Will Milburn

The Yorkshire Area meeting finally staged its meeting at Sheriff Hutton on Sunday, they staged a six race card, with the highlight been the Novice Riders race, which saw brother and sister Cherry Coward and David Easterby train the first two home.

Sonevafushi was giving Harry Bannister his first ride in point to points and made most of the running, whilst the odds on favourite Mister Quasimodo was held up in rear he made good efforts to challenge the leader after the last, but could not quite reach the prolific pointer Sonevafushi, who gave Harry his first win from his only ride. Nile Moon was well in contention till around two out and finished third and should be capable of going close next time. David Easterby reported after the race that there were some nerves going into the race as the favourite Mister Quasimodo had refused in his recent schooling sessions.

The first race was the Club Members Conditions race and saw Tom Greenall record his first winner of the season aboard My Old Piano. Held in last for most of the race My Old Piano jumped some what erratic at a few fences however, cruised up after two out and was pushed out to win comfortably, Keeverfield who was always prominent finished second for Sam Drake, whilst Lem Putt who travelled well throughout the race was back in third and should be capable of picking up a race of this level.

The Restricted race saw Dark Moon bounce rite back to his best after been picked up for a mere 1900gns at Doncaster. Dark Moon appears to have benefited from been in a smaller yard this season and some "nagging about". Always travelling well Guy Brewer forced his mount up to win after the last, with Elusive Swallow who at one point looked beat, rallied well near the line and the pace setter My Go Now back in third.

The Mens Open saw an impressive performance from Jaunty Flight, always travelling well Tom Greenall was clear over the last and stayed on well. David Easterby bought this former Oliver Sherwood in mate in a hope that she will make a good addition to his breeding operation. Harmony Brig made a lot of the running and did well to stick on for second whilst Areyacoddinmee did what he does best and stayed on strongly from the back into third.

The Ladies Open saw Optimistic Harry continue the good run of owner/trainer/rider Sam Drake as she stayed on well to fend of Jacqueline Coward and Narcisco who usually needs his first run of the season and should be better for it. Impact Zone was staying on nicely back in third and is one to note in future.

Grab a jockey was the name of the game in the last race, with 18 declared horses there didn't appear to be enough riders, however 15 runners lined up for the race and saw Lewesdon Tom bounce out and make most of the running for Jacqueline Coward and managed to fend off all pursuers in what looked a competitive event. Lewesdon Tom is homebred by Terry Beadle and records his first success after showing plenty of promise last season. Former hurdler Transporter was sent of 9-4fav for Tom Greenall in second and was just denied a treble, whilst brother Oliver travelled well throughout and stayed on nicely to finish third.
