South Wold
Brocklesby Park

Saturday 15th March 2008
by Emma Forman

The South Wold point to point took place on Saturday a misty day that quickly became a foggy day and unfortunately lead to the abandonment of the meeting after the fourth race. This was very disappointing both for racegoers, owners, jockeys and for the organisers who had put so much work into the holding the meeting.

Nevertheless, there was some exciting action starting with thirteen runners going to post for the 5, 6 & 7 year olds confined maiden race. This was won by promising six year old Lord Of The Knar ridden by Alex Vaughan – Jones.

Vaughan- Jones then passed his colours on to his younger brother Sam who rode Nokimover to finish second in the next race; the PPORA Club Members Novice riders race. This race was won by Montecristo and 17 year old Charlie Johnston for whom it was a first winner from 4 races. Charlie is the son of Mark Johnston the Middleham trainer and Montecristo is owned and trained by his Mother Deirdre Johnston.

The Confined Hunts race resulted in a close finish between Flying Spur and Teeton Bollinger. Flying Spur is owned and trained by Roger Jackson and was ridden by Steve Magee. This 7 year old grey gelding would appear to have improved from his recent win at Welbeck and could be one to follow for the remainder of the season.

The closing stages of the Men’s Open race was the only part visible to the crowd. Buckby Lane, who was sent off the 5-6 favourite beat Persian Hero in a close finish. This was a second Men’s Open win in the Midlands area for Buckby Lane and jockey Sam Waley Cohen. It was also a qualifier for the £10 000 3miles ½ furlong Volkswagen Touareg Mens Point to Point Championship Hunter Chase final at Towcester on Monday 12 th May.

The next point to point in the Midlands Area is the South Notts at Thorpe Lodge on Easter Monday 24 th March, first race 2pm.
