Tim Vaughan rode his first ever four-timer at the recent well-run Banwen Miners meeting. Tim, a chartered surveyor from Pencoed, was successful on Buckland Boy (men's open),Wareyth (restricted), Kings Euro (intermediate) and Senegal Tiger (maiden division one).

Buckland Boy won by a neck from the pacemaking Corkan, Wareyth came home ten lengths clear of Lost Treasure, Kings Euro had two lengths to spare over Fruitfull Citizen and Senegal Tiger made all to beat stable-mate Carraig by some thirty lengths.

Buckland Boy and Kings Euro are owned by Rhondda's Norman Jones and trained by Tim's wife Abbi who was saddling her eighth winner of the season. Wareyth and Senegal Tiger are trained in West Wales by Beverley Thomas.

A five-timer looked likely when Tim partnered the well backed Thenford Lad in division two of the maiden. However, the six-year-old jumped badly throughout and was pulled up four from home. The race was won by Paul Evans's French-bred Danbury who, under his trainer Marc Barber, won by two lengths from Devil's Teardrop.

Diane Williams's Step And Run, partnered by her daughter Jane, 24, made nearly all in the ladies' open to win by three lengths from SeantheSmuggler.

Amanda Sloyan's Itsallupintheair, enterprisingly ridden by Jodie Hughes, came home a distance ahead of the disappointing odds-on Lady Myfanwy in the confined race.

In a match for the members, Rhys Hughes chalked-up his ninth winner of the season on Robert Scrine's Misty Gem who finished alone after Hay Bluff Lady had unseated hunt race secretary Lode De Smet at the first fence.

Former National Hunt jockey Guy Lewis, standing in for regular race commentor Edward Williams, made his debut and did a remarkably good job coming over loud and clear and keeping racegoers well informed.

During the afternoon, a special presentation was made to Barbara and Dillwyn Thomas of the Llangeinor Hunt in recognition of their services to point-to-pointing by the Clerk of the Course Bill Hancock.

Meanwhile, James Price chalked-up his first double at the rearranged Curre & Llangibby with Secret Glen (members) and Tigu (open maiden).

Secret Glen's task was made easier when the challenging odds-on Tanmeya fell at the 13th fence and Tigu's main rival Members Only came down three fences from the finish.

However, the fences are there to be jumped and no-one will begrudge the 29 year-old Llanwern steelworker his moment of glory as at the previous Curre & Llangibby meeting in March he was injured when Accordian Leader reared up in the parade ring and fell on top of him.

Secret Glen is owned by Peter Ponting and Tigu is owned by Chris Bolton and trained by his wife Julie whose previous claim to fame was riding Shesheen to victory at the Tredegar Farmers back in 1982!

Christine Evans, 22 from Pontypridd, riding Robert Rowsell's Silent Too, a horse he bought on the internet, rode a well judged race to take the restricted by 20 lengths from the favourite LetsPlay ridden by Tim Vaughan.

Mrs Rae Jones's course specialist Loch Ennel, confidently ridden by Liam Payter, easily won the men's open in a time which was ten seconds faster than when he won the equivalent race over the same course in March coming home eight lengths ahead of Titchfield.

In a match for the ladies' open, Beth Roberts's Chesnut Annie, partnered by Isabel Tompsett, made every yard of the running and although the odds-on Fantastic Champion made a bad mistake at the ninth fence I don't think it made any difference to the end result.

Tim Vaughan riding the odds-on Manhunter in the intermediate went clear four fences from home to win cleverly by two lengths from Red Rascal partnered by Christine Evans. Cowbridge's James Tudor brought his season's tally of wins to 23 with a double on Lucent and Gillies Nephew at Kingston Blount.
