A double for rider Jonathan Barnes, a dead heat in the final race and an close finish in the first division of the maiden kept punters  entertained at the Dulverton Farmers point to point at Mounsey Hill Gate on Exmoor.

There were also first wins for Tessa Hayes, 19, and Mark Heuff, 23. Tessa works in Ireland and flew to Bristol Airport on Saturday morning to partner her parents Take the Brush to victory in the members’ race.

Mark Heuff rode, and trained, Stafford Sampson’s Aller Coombe to beat the experienced Polly Gundry on That’s my Boy in a close finish to the first maiden.

Jonathan Barnes’ double was initiated in the Intermediate by Le Cure who got the better of the ultra-consistent Father Mansfield (Caroline Prouse) in the Intermediate. Barnes went on to win the division one part two of the maiden on Sootsir with ease from Richard Woollacott and All Sewn Up.

The second division of the maiden was a dead heat between Les Jefford on Butlerdidit and Martin Sweetland on Handstand with Barnes back in third on Telimar.

At this meeting last year David Barlow rode a treble on horses trained by Tessa White. This year he had to make do with the Mens Open which Belarus took for the second season in a row at the generous odds of 8-1 with favourite Quickswood unable to get closer that six lengths at the line.

Breteche was also bidding for a 2002/2003 double in the ladies’ open but was seen off by Steady Eddie and A De Lisle Wells. What A Mover looked smart at Bratton Down last week when winning a maiden race and the horse, trained by Ollie Bush, upgraded smoothly to take the Restricted under Polly Gundry.
