South Shropshire at Eyton-on-Severn
Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May 2016
by Rory Alkin

The heavy morning rain eased by the start of the meeting and there was sunshine for most of the afternoon with 53 runners taking part. Highlights were training doubles for Philip Rowley and Sheila Crow with her jockey Paddy Gerety riding both winners.

The first leg of the Crow/Gerety double came in the Mens Open where Fruit Fayre collared the long odds-on favourite Now Ben early in the straight and ran out a convincing 10 length. The Robin Lewis owned mare maintained her unbeaten record at the track registering her sixth win at Eyton. The Crow horses appear to have turned a corner and Gerety followed up in the Confined with a three length win on Abbeyview from the David O'Brien owned, ridden and trained Danners.

Rowley quickly gained compensation after Now Ben's defeat, when Camilla Henderson took it up six out on Khyber Kim from the leader Abbie McCain on Dunowen Point and steadily drew clear to beat Ally Sterling on Gauvain by a distance in the fastest time of the day. This was a really impressive performance from the 14 year old who seems to be defying his advancing years.

The second leg of the Rowley double was in the Restricted where Lewis Futter on Leighton Lass went ahead at the second last and held on well to beat Brockton Moay by three lengths. This proved a really popular first winner for the 18 year old in his third season, riding the mare for his father David and Glenn Rowles.

The opening two and a half mile Maiden saw two horses on their racecourse debut contesting the finish with the 5 year old Snuff Box ridden by Tommy O'Brien winning by one and a half lengths from the 4 year old Go Steady. The winner is trained by Zoe Hammond for Don Constable who bred him in Ireland.

David Mansell rode a very determined finish on The De Thaix in the concluding three mile Maiden to beat Tommy O'Brien on Twilight Fox by a couple of lengths. This was the jockey's 190th winner and he is looking forward to the challenge of clocking up his double century. The nine year old was bought by John Priday and Wyn Owen out of Robin Dickin's stable three seasons ago and is trained by Glyn Slade-Jones in Herefordshire.
