A day which started promising with sunshine and good to soft going turned very wet from 11am changing the ground to soft and depleting the crowd.

Only 4 faced the starter in the 3m Maiden with the unraced Late Romantic trained by Ollie Greenall the odds on favourite but he couldn't cope with the more experienced Belton Red Fox ridden by Gillon Crow in a good finish. Late Romantic will surely go one better soon. John Beckett regular supporter of Bangor point-to-points, and who's wife owns the winner was celebrating his 80th birthday.

The Mixed Open again had only 4 runners with Any Given Day - rated 143 over hurdles from the McCain yard - sent off at odds on. But it was course specialist Threapwood which prevailed following an unseat in the corresponding race here 3 weeks ago. He was chased home by the game mare Onetwobeat with Any Given Day back in 3rd.

The Confined was a good contest and saw the 10-1 shot Penang Island (Derek Smith) coming back to form and easily accounting for Numbercruncher and Cocacobana. Look for this one at Tabley where he beat Executive Benefit last season.

A strong Intermediate with all horses rated between 87 and 97 rather fell apart with the departure of Charlie Wingnut and Overafrica at the 13th fence, leaving Johnny OG and Irish Anthem to battle it out with Rob Jarrett and Johnny OG prevailing. This was Rob's 50th winner and his first after a serious injury. Trainer of Irish Anthem, Sheila Crow, was fined £75 by the Stewards for failing to declare the correct headgear.

Sheila Crow soon tasted success when Toodle Horse, nicely ridden by young Joe O'Reilly, won the Restricted by 2 lengths from Desert Sting.

Radio Nowhere (Emma Chaston) has been racing in Ladies Opens in the Northern Area and has 3 placings this season so it was no surprise to see this combination take the 2 1/2 mile Maiden but they were pushed all the way by newcomer Beware The Bear (Ed Glassonbury). This is the latest of the "Bear" horses from George and Anne Barlow and a win will surely be not long in coming. This was Emma Chaston's first winner and she will now head to Whittington full of confidence.

The closing PPORA Club was run in a nasty rain storm but 6 of the 7 entries came forward and the experienced Gullible Gordon (Peter Bryan) had too many guns and came home well clear of Donnas Palm and Drumlister. Favourite Joe The Trucker fell when going well.

Another great day's racing at Bangor with no serious harm to man or beast but a day for wet weather gear.
