Tivyside and Carmarthenshire
Lydstep
Sunday 26th April 2015
by Maria Evans

Proud parents Peter and Karen Bowen not only watched their 17 year old son Sean Bowen pick up the Conditional Jockeys title at Sandown on Saturday, but were also at Lydstep on Sunday, at the Tivyside and Carmarthenshire Hunt meeting, to witness their eldest son Mickey get his first treble as a Point to Point trainer.

Local girl Jodie Hughes was on board two of his winners, first of which was Sir Du Bearn in the Ladies Open. It was almost a steering job for Hughes, who was all smiles coming back into paddock on her second winner of the season. Sir Du Bearn seems to have taken well to Point to Pointing life, with this his second win at this course, clocking up the fastest time of the day. Up until this season, he was with Mickeys dad Peter running under rules. Winner number two of the day for Hughes was Mister Bricolage in the Restricted, again like Sir Du Bearn, a previous winner at the course this season. He was another easy winner for the team, who under a patient ride from Hughes, was always going better than the others. This was winner number eight of the trainer Mickey Bowen, who says the horse will go to his fathers for the summer jumping season.

Ciaran Gethings, from Wicklow, Ireland, came all the way down from his base at Phillip Hobbs in Minehead to ride Bowens third winner of the day, Bobs Law. This was their first outing since finishing seventh in the Aintree Foxhunters. In a four runner race, he was the only one to come home after an incident packed circuit and a half. Kusadasi unseated James Tudor at the 7th, cracking Tudors crash helmet in the process. That horse then carried out John Mathias on Raffa, leaving Qualviro and Bobs Law alone for half a circuit. Qualviro and Bradley Gibbs were an unlucky faller at the 12th, leaving Bobs Law on his own for the final half circuit.

The biggest smile of the day came from 18 year old Elen Nicholas who rode her first winner on Kisha King in the Hunt Members. This was a fifth win for Kisha King who has been a loyal servant to owner Dai Rees and has taught a lot of youngsters how to do the job. Nicholas, who hails from Bangor, and comes from a Pony Club background, now works for Dai Rees in Clarbeston Road. Harpsy Cord was a runaway winner of the West Wales Club Members Conditions Race, beating favourite My Coranna by an official 10 lengths. This was the nine year olds third win of the season, having been placed twice on other occasions.

The Conditions Maiden went the way of Master Ally, who was a winner on his first time on a racecourse. John Mathias' Irish recruit was ridden by Bradley Gibbs, who came back and said the horse had run away with him. The five year old is sure to have more to come, and we might see him once more this season for connections. The Open Maiden was won by A Country Mile for jockey Mathew Barber, and brother Marc. He was settled in behind other joint favourite Joshella and John Mathias, until joining him on the bend, and going three lengths clear by the last. Connections used the word 'tool' describe the seven year old, who have had the horse in their yard for three months, after getting it from Ireland. He looks to be an improving type, that'll keep galloping, and will go better on softer ground.

The next West Wales meeting will be on Monday May 4th, for the Banwen Miners, at their new course at Llwyn Du, Ynys Y Mond, Swansea. First race is at 1.30pm.
