Chiddingfold, Leconfield & Cowdray
Tweseldown
Sunday 6th March 2011
by Robin Gray

Sam Waley-Cohen flew himself to Tweseldown by helicopter and quickly put himself into winning mood with a double. Sam, 28, poised to ride Long Run, second favourite for next weeks Cheltenham Gold Cup, enjoyed a two length success on Jacalou in the Moonsbrook Alpacas Restricted.

This was quickly followed in the first division of the Southern Cranes & Access Services Maiden by Cavite Epsilon whose first racecourse appearance this was. 'I hadn't even sat on the horse until we went out for the race,' said Sam, 'but he jumped superbly all the way - Tom Lacey can certainly train his horses!'

Lacey, who is also responsible for Jacalou, recalled that he had ridden a dozen winners at Tweseldown in the l980's.

Local champion Philip York kept himself in the picture for the National jockeys title with a comfortable success in the Harwoods Landrover Mens Open on Pocket Park. 'That's my eighth winner of the season,' said Philip, 'and I'm still in the Championship race - but there are three months of the season to go!'

Sarah Ashby on favourite Alphabetical held off the determined challenge of Clare Wills on High Five in the Instoneair Ladies race while rising star Tom Cannon easily won the Smithsgore Members & Farmers on another favourite, Boomarang.

Tweseldown enjoyed its most successful day in terms of runners and attendants for many years and riders were fulsome in their praise for the condition of the course and the fences overseen by the new Clerk of the course Richard Langley whose day job is at Brighton racecourse.
