Hampshire Frensham property developer Fenton Ramsahoye, 46, who began point-to-point racing only this season after a lifetime of motor racing as a hobby, rode his first winner at Hackwood Park on Sunday. On the 14 year old Heaven Is Above, Fenton beat Brendan’s Surprise by four lengths. Seven set out for the three mile Countryside Alliance Club race for novice riders, but as first one and then another partnership came to grief, it was left to these two contenders to fight out the finish. ‘The strong gallop suited my horse – it turned out to be the fastest time of the day,’ said the jubilant jockey. ‘I was in no hurry to tackly Brendan’s Surprise until the home straight and the last fence. Heaven Is Above is brilliant – his jumping was superb and I am thrilled to have won. It was only my fifth ride and I can’t wait to come back to Hackwood with him on Easter Monday, 13 April!’ Heaven Is Above is trained at Morestead by Jenny Gordon and Fenton was supported by his wife Sally and excited daughters, Willow, 11, and Georgina, 8, both pupils at Frensham Heights School. There was chaos when the 10 runners for the Maiden Race anticipated the start, and the advance flag lady at the first fence dropped her white flag in her hurry to escape the cavalry charge! While several riders soon became aware it was a false start and pulled up, half the field completed a full circuit of the course. The stewards ordered a re-run – allowing trainers to withdraw their horses, and four took part half and hour later when Blue Rebel beat The Beast by one and a quarter lengths.
