East Cornwall DARREN Edwards rattled up a treble at the East Cornwall’s point-to-point at Great Trethew on Saturday initiated by the Sam Holdsworth-trained Gun Park in the second of three maiden races run over two miles four furlongs. Bought three months ago by Rebecca Welch from trainer Chris Down, the five year old won easily, leading over the final two fences and scoring by three lengths. Edwards second winner came in the Volkswagen Touareg Men’s Open on Knighstbridge Hill, trained by his father Gordon at Wheddon Cross. With the horse not quite getting the three mile trip, the snail’s pace proved the winning ticket and he scored by a length from Nditlir. Grande Bretagne delighted his connections when winning the confined maiden and concluding Edwards’ treble. The nine-year-old is owned and trained by Sarah Prouse whose husband Henry said: “We were going to give him away but I don’t think we will now. He gets very fizzed up and hates other horses around him and he’s very strong so we put a drop noseband on him today which enabled Darren to anchor him a bit.” Gordon Chambers had the bookies running for cover with a short priced double both ridden by Ian Chanin. Rita Heard’s On Your Toes pulled away on the run in to score well in the Exeter Racecourse Intermediate Race. “I’ve been praying for rain all week and driving my work colleagues mad,” said Rita who added that she rides the 12-year-old every Sunday. Bishby Barnaby confirmed the promise he showed at the course when winning a maiden a month ago by taking the restricted in good style. “He’s an exciting prospect and he’s improving all the time. He could be a nice horse for hunter chases in the future,” said Chambers. The eight-year-old, who has had just four starts in his career, learned much from the experience with Chanin making sure the front running My Big Sister did not get out of his site. “It’s been a good experience for him to work a bit harder this time. I didn’t want My Big Sister to get too far away and he’s learned from that.” It was an early birthday present for Chanin who next day celebrated his 21st and began the party in the paddock with a bottle of champagne. “What a way to toast my birthday,” he said. The Turner family, whose name has been synonymous with point-to-point racing in the Westcountry for decades, claimed the remaining three races on the card. George Turner, who gave up race riding 13 years ago aged 60, saddled a welcome winner when Brimley took the first two miles four furlong maiden in the hands of Richard Woollacott. “It’s been a bloody long time since I’ve had a winner and I was getting very fed up,” said Turner who rides out his two pointers every day. Brimley has proved a bargain, purchased for just 600gns from Exeter Horse Sales as an unbroken four year old. Turner’s daughter Pauline Geering saddled Comebacktodaddy to win the third maiden in the hands of Will Biddick. The huge chestnut, who stands 17.2hh high, was in the lead on the climb for home, but in a bold jump over the last and came home the two length winner. The seven-year-old was bought privately in Fethard Co Tipperary after Pauline and her husband Tony said they had been plied with whisky. “We went into this shed and were told he was 15.2hh. I said he looks bigger that than and they said it was because it had a very low ceiling,” said Tony who had told his wife prior to the trip he didn’t want to buy any more horses, and certainly not a big one. Then it was Turner’s niece Mandy Hand’s turn to score her second win of the season on Paddy The Piper who was the half length winner of the ladies’ open. “I probably went a bit quick,” admitted Hand who had to shake him up on the run in to gain the half length win from Wee Fly. “ The 12-year-old will probably have a brief break now before being campaigned for the rest of the season.
