Hackwood Park
Sunday 13th April 2008
by Robin Gray

Rhythm King, a regular at Hackwood Park and Tweseldown, scored his twentieth success in point-to-points at Hackwood Park on Sunday. Ridden by owner/trainer Godfrey Maundrell, Rhythm King beat Splash and Dash by five lengths in the Night Nannies Confined Race.

‘Rhythm King has been wonderful old servant,’ said Maundrell, himself a veteran on the wrong side of fifty, ‘He tries his heart out every time, and although he is thirteen years old, he won’t be retired just yet. He has come out of the race in good order, he is a fit horse and he will certainly run once or twice more this season anyway.’ This was Maundrell’s sixth success of the year and he is approaching a career total of 140 winners.

Most exciting finish of the day was that of the Rathbones Open in which the season’s leading national novice rider Rhys Flint got Iris’s Prince up to beat Who Else Knew by a short head, with Noakarad De Verzee a further short head back in third.

Ryan Bliss, rider of Who Else Know, was fined £70 by the stewards for intemperate use of the whip.

Sixteen year old Flint from South Wales completed a double when Bobosh got the better of Monty’s Tag in the Julian Berry Memorial Novice Riders Race.

Monty’s Tag was ridden by another 16 year old, Georgine Andrews, who, earlier in the day, had won the Members race at the Oakley point-to-point in Northamptonshire.

Hampshire jockey, Julia Batho, rode her first winner when Lord Alpha won the Members race and young Irish rider, Brian Roomey, based at Lambourn with trainer Brendan Powell, also broke his duck winning the Robins Row Restricted on Jewel Song.
