Woodland Pytchley
Easter Saturday 22nd March 2008
by Graham Taylor

A fine treble of wins for jockey Tom Ellis and trainer Jimmy Tarry, in between bursts of snow showers, hail stones and some bouts of sunshine, were the order of the day as a decent size crowd enjoyed some exciting racing when the Woodland Pytchley held their annual Point to Point meeting at Dingley, near Market Harborough on Saturday.

The meeting kicked off with the first race, The Woodland Pychley & Fernie Members, Subscibers & Farmers Race, which was sponsored by Hows Roadsafe and five horses went to post. Limerick Leader, the hot favourite and the mount of Gemma Hutchinson took up the running at the halfway point and never looked like getting caught and won by 20 lengths from the Fernie gelding, Carbon Footprint with Trevira a distance away third.

ECO Drilling & Greenfuel 4You, kindly sponsored the Confined Hunts Race and this race also attracted a field of five. This was won by the Gerald Bailey trained Cheyne, who was well ridden by stable jockey, Dickie Barrett. Taking up the running four fences from home, the seven year old had too much pace for the favourite, Teeton Dazzler, to win by four lengths. Nick Docker on Bulmer Bank took third spot.

Next race up was the Dodson & Horrell Club Members Race for Novice Riders. A good field of twelve went to post and this race was run in the fastest time of the day and the race also produced the closest finish. Willie The Kid, ridden by Ed. Cookson had just a head to spare on the line from the well supported Tooley Park, ridden by Jonny Bailey. Nokimover, from the Bailey yard took third place.

The Mens Open Race was sponsored by Sturgess Land Rover of Leicester and although only four went to post two top form horses dominated the betting market. Denvale, a recent Garthorpe winner, and The Hookie Bookie, a winner of three races this year, as expected raced neck and neck early on. However Tom Ellis took The Hookie Bookie to the front and won with a bit in hand to land his first leg of a treble.

The winner of this race is now eligible for the £10,000 3m ½ f Volkswagen H/C Final to be run at Towcester on May 12 th.

King West, The Property & Development Specialists, kindly sponsored the fifth race, The Restricted Race, and here ten horses went to post. Although the weather had for most of the day been reasonable this race was run in a hailstorm. However Tom Ellis produced Bobbies Ryde to perfection and held off the fast finishing joint favourite, Walters Laddie with Tanners Hill three lengths back in third.

Final race on the card was The Maiden Race for 5,6 and 7 year olds and run over 2 ½ miles. This was the third leg of the treble for Ellis who took up the running on Eydon Run, after the well fancied, Bonnie Zoe had unseated David Maxwell with four fences to jump. Velvet Red and Watchthespace finished second and third.

Next local Midland meeting is the Belvoir at Garthorpe, near Melton Mowbray, on Saturday, March 29th.
