Atherstone A decent size crowd enjoyed some excellent racing when the Atherstone Hunt held their popular meeting at Clifton-on-Dunsmore, near Rugby last Sunday. Ground conditions were good and apart from the opening race, runners were plentiful. M.J.Carter Associates sponsored the first race, Members, Subscribers and Farmers Race, where three went to post. Fusion of Tunes, the joint favourite, ridden by Jon Day, was always going better than his two rivals and finished with a winning margin of 15 lengths. Sarah Phizacklea on Bold Bahamian was the only other finisher.
Nine horses went to post for the second race, the Open Maiden Race for Mares Only. This race being sponsored by The Thoroughbred Breeders Association. This turned out to be a ding-dong battle all the way up the run in between market leaders, Titantic Quarter and Call Me A Lady. The former holding a head advantage at the line.
Howkins & Harrison were sponsors of the following race, The Confined Hunts Race and seven horses went to post. This was won by the Bill Warner trained, Tallow Bridge, a recent winner at Guilsborough. Jockey Stuart Morris had the horse in the rear before making rapid headway to take up the running on the final bend, winning by six lengths from Hi Up Brenkley (Richard Armson) with Ungaretti, a further 10 lengths back in third.
Four horses went to post for the Mens Open Race, sponsored by Trinity Motors of Hinckley and this was fought out again by the two market leaders. Dickie Barrett on the Bailey trained, Kjetil holding off the David Maxwell ridden Dante Citizen. Mighty Strong finishing 12 lengths away in third.
James Bennett Limited were sponsors of The Ladies Open Race and this proved to be the fastest and best race of the day. 10 horses went to post with Carryonharry, a winner this season of six races, a hot favourite. The 13 year old grey was always at the head of affairs but was unable to repel the strong challenge of the Sarah Phizacklea ridden, Danaeve. Free, the mount of Gemma Hutchinson snatching second place on the line.
Seventeen went to post for the G. & C.A. Lee sponsored Restricted Race and this provided a comfortable win for the Fred Hutsby ridden Mister Bertolli, a seven year old who had already shown some consistent form this season. Leading for most of the way the gelding always had a bit in hand over, This One Is A Boy and Northall Lad who took the minor placings.
Seventh race on the card was The Open Maiden Race, Division 1 and sponsored by The Late Mrs. Harry Barton and Family. There were nine runners here and this race went to the unraced Autumnindubrovnik who beat Sir Harry Henbit and Mountain Trooper.
Division 2 of The Open Maiden attracted a field of only four. Henry Kinchin took the Jimmy Tarry trained Trevira into a long lead and never looked like getting caught, winning by an easy twenty lengths. Mr Wonderful and Lungarno took the minor placings. This race was kindly sponsored by Sharnford Tractors Ltd.
