Holderness at Dalton Park
Sunday 25th March 2018
by Will Milburn

This weekend saw the return of pointing in Yorkshire after several weeks of cold, wet weather decimated the point to point calendar. The Holderness staged their meeting at Dalton Park where conditions had dried up nicely and the man who kicked the day off and went on to complete a double was Jack Teal. John Dawson also secured a double and concluded a good weekend after scoring at Overton the day before and strengthened his Yorkshire and National title chances.

Jack Teal was the first to score in the opening race, the Hunt Members, where three went to post, aboard Grouse Lodge. Max My Boy set the early pace but was headed by the eventual winner half way and Grouse Lodge led the remainder and stayed on well to hold off a rallying Max My Boy and Tom Strawson, whilst Charlotte Kemp and Roll The Dice completed in third. Owned by Charles Clark who is Huntsman and Master to the Holderness, Grouse Lodge was a winning delight for his connections, "That was like winning the Gold Cup" said Charles, who was delighted with his winner on home turf.

Jack didn't take long to make it a double when he took the 2m6f maiden aboard Matts Commision who on this occassion was trained by himself and owned by his mother and auntie. The pair led from the flag fall and galloped on strongly to the line and win well to hold of the Nicky Tinkler trained Jamars Star, whilst favourite Bite The Biscuit under Will Easterby was third. The 5yo son of Beneficial was purchased from Ireland last spring after showing some promise in Irish points. "He nearly fell at Cottenham and I think it knocked his confidence for the rest of the race" explained Jack of his charge after putting up a disappointing effort last time, however he has done a great job at returning him to form.

John Dawson was another man in form and began by scoring in the Mens Open race where he steered Fever Pitch to success for the Crane family. Trained by himself, John relented from the early pace and waited in rear and made good progress to swoop late in the home straight and win from The Mobile Man who put up a gallant effort in second, whilst Panama Canal was a close third. Fever Pitch was scoring for the second time since joining the point ranks and looks a consistent 12yo.

Dawson continued his good day in the final race, the 3 mile Open Maiden for Robin Tate and The Father and Daughter Partnership, partnering Mr Pepperpot to success. The winner had put up a couple of good efforts already this season and got off the mark at the third attempt. The winner was given to connections by Harvey Smith and has finally come good for his current trainer after making his belated debut at 9yo. Raleagh Mountain was the 7/4 favourite and was runner up in second for Lottie Crane whilst McMurphy was a well held third.

The Crane's continued their good day when they took the Ladies Open with the Justin Landy trained Knocklong under Lottie Crane, the pair made most of the running and ran their rivals into the ground to justify favouritism. This was the winners second run for new connections and a delighted Lottie now leads the Yorkshire Ladies title. Iron Chancellor was back in second under Jess Bedi whilst Young Dillon looked hard work back in third for the Pimlott team.

The Pimlott's continued their good season in the Restricted race with Streets Of Milan, owned by the Just For The Craic Partnership and piloted by Tom Strawson. The pair were always prominent and stayed on well to fend off long time leader Crazy Penguin and Will Easterby, whilst the John Dawson ridden and trained Ancient Empire took his step up in class well to finish third. The winner was one of two hefty purchases bought for connections at Tattersalls November sale, the son of Milan was acquired for £21,000 after winning an Irish maiden and is a brother to the useful chaser and pointer Thats Rhythm is likely to continue on an upward curve.

The Club Members race over 2m6f, was a rather eventful one, as two contenders crashed out mid race, whilst long odds on favourite Ballinahow Bill ran out on the bend into the home straight, this left Royal Benefit with a long advantage under Joe Wright and the pair galloped on relentlessly to fend off the fast finishing The Sweetner under Alex Fielding and that pair should surely find a Restricted this season, the third went to Joseph Williamson and Replacement Plan and completed a string of huge prices with the first three home returning 25-1, 33-1 and 25-1.
