Unlike most other meetings in the country,
there was a plethora of runners at Sunday’s Pytchley fixture at
Guilsborough.
Members
There were ten runners for the members’ race, which is about six or
so more than the average meeting! Caroline Bailey provided 40% of the
runners, but was unable to land the prize which fell to Stuart Morris
aboard the quirky Who Is Equiname, providing a welcome winner for the Bill
Warner yard, who have reportedly been in the doldrums over the past few
weeks. The winner has undoubted ability, but only appears to show it when
he wants and cannot be considered a future betting proposition.
Light The Sky (Katie Norris) can from the clouds to take second, as did
Jimmy Tarry, taking third on Lottie The Lotus, a case of a veteran aboard
a veteran!
Brocklesby maiden winner Cloudy Bay Boy (Rowan Cope) ran well for a long
way before fading into fourth and will be seen to better effect in
restricted company.
Confined
Eleven went to post here, though Casual Water (Philip Newton) failed
to jump off at the start. The heavily backed Antartic Prince (Mark
Handley), a Towcester Restricted winner, was sent off a short price
favourite but could only finish fourth. The race fell to Nautical Lad (Joe
Docker) who was always travelling well and left his rivals toiling once
Docker quickened the pace. Nautical Lad is a talented horse, but has had
no end of problems and if these are behind him, he can go onto better
things.
Springlea Tower (Richard Hunnisett) was doing his best work at the finish
and was only beaten four lengths by the winner having looked a no hoper
turning for home. One thing that this horse does is stay and he will
appreciate a more testing track.
Topical Tip (Emma Boone) stayed on to take third and deserves a small
victory.
Antartic Prince and Find Me Another (Rowan Cope) finished fourth and fifth
respectively and need to show improvement if they’re going to score in
this company.
Edmond (Holly Campbell) ran no sort of race and was tailed off from the
start.
Ladies Open
Upham Lord was once again made a long odds on favourite, but on paper he
had a serious challenger here in the shape of Mystic Native (Candy
Thomas), the winner of a Howick Ladies Open in March. However, it was
business as usual as Jill Dawson quickened up turning for home and the
rest, as they say, is history. That makes it six on the bounce this season
and an amazing seventeen-on-the-trot for the Dawson charge, who is
starting to look invincible in this company.
Mystic Native came home a well-beaten second and will no doubt return to
his native Wales for easier pickings.
Borderline Breeze (Hannah Watson) took third, with Macfin (Louise Allan)
fourth.
Mens Open
Market Rasen Hunter Chase winner Fair Exchange was made favourite
here, but Paul Taiano had to give second best to Ebullient Equiname, who
came with a wet sail to collar the eventual third Tom De Savoie (Rowan
Cope) at the last and got home under Stuart Morris’ driving finish.
Ebullient Equiname, scoring for the second successive time this season,
isn’t the most trustworthy of customers but is a useful sort on his
day… when that day is, however, is altogether a different question!
The runner up lost little in defeat here, neither did Tom De Savoie, who
always seems to produce his best at this time of year.
Red Rebel (Joe Docker) ran well for a long way before fading into fourth.
Restricted
Larkhill maiden winner Kustom Kit Grisley showed his rivals a clean pair
of heels here, taking a restricted at the first time of asking under a
confident ride from James Diment (who commentator Iain MacKenzie referred
to as Dickie Barrett throughout the race… Barrett was in fact observing
from the sidelines due to an arm injury sustained the day before!). The
9-year-old son of Be My Native obviously appreciates a fast surface and
will probably pick up another race before the end of the season.
Second placed Teeton Fizz (Andrew Sansome) showed enough to suggest that a
restricted isn’t out of reach, but the one to take out of the race is
the 5-year-old Bunratty’s Sole. From the East Anglian yard of Nibby
Bloom, the son of Phardante was making his racecourse debut and was nursed
round by Stuart Morris to take third place. There were numerous maiden
winners behind him here and he looks the proverbial “good thing” for a
maiden.
Maiden Division One
Caroline Bailey finally got on the score sheet with Budle Bay (Rowan
Cope), denying Grey Warrior (Stuart Morris) by three-lengths with
Gibralter Bill (Thomas Ellis) a further two-lengths back in third.
The winner has taken five runs to get his head in front and may take a
restricted when he’s gained more experience in that grade.
Grey Warrior, now a 10-year-old, has been placed on numerous occasions and
deserves a small success, as does Gibralter Bill, who’s been placed on
his only two starts.
Make a note of Saucy Kirina, who was given a sympathetic ride by Matthew
Baldock before pulling up.
Maiden Division Two
Bailey and Cope completed a double on the day with Denvale, who was
the main benefactor when Royal Alibi (Simon Walker) departed two from home
when still in front. The winner, a 5-year-old by Denel, looks a good sort
and can go onto better things.
Tommy Hotspur (Nick Docker) plugged on to take second and will be seen to
better effect with cut in the ground on a stayer’s course.
Gentlemans Relish (James Diment) travelled well for a long way but
weakened tamely at the business end. He could possibly take a maiden.
Nick Pearce deserves a mention once again, this time for his ride on Wot
About Me. The 8-year-old is renowned for bolting then fading after two
miles, but on this occasion Pearce kept the horse going right to the end,
finishing fourth, undoubtedly his best run in a long time.
Royal Alibi looked a little unlucky and was down for ten minutes after
taking a heavy looking fall, but thankfully rose to fight another day.
Despite any real form prior to this run, he may gain compensation on fast
ground, as long as the tumble hasn’t affected his confidence.
