Supreme
Citizen has been a model of consistency this season. With regular pilot
Jane Williams in the saddle, this combination ploughed through the
Chaddesley Corbett mud to score a hard fought victory in the Ladies Open
during Saturdays Harkaway Club meeting at the Worcestershire venue and
gain qualification to the Gerrard Final at Wetherby in May. The
favourite Gill'Mar held every chance turning for home but was unable to
match the winner's speed over the final three fences. Supreme Citizen is
trained by the riders mother Diana at Enville, near Stourbridge. She is
part of the organising committee at this meeting, so their success was
obviously well received by the locals. Mr
Naborro provided Jim Callow with an appropriate 34th Wedding
Anniversary present after his success in Division I of the 5,6 &
7-year-old Maiden. Adrian Wintle dictated the pace from the start on the
Helen Needham trained 6-year-old and they got first run on their rivals
down the home straight and were always in command from this point. Mr
Naborro's stablemate Snowtre started a warm favourite for Division II and
was expected to provide a double for his Broom (Kidderminster)
connections, but he was never able to mount an effective challenge in a
race that was won in impressive style by the Caroline Robinson trained and
Jeremy Beasley owned Petrouge. Tim
Stephenson and Clive Hitching's Thatsforeel were unable to cope with the
strong finish of Mr Kermit in the opening Members. Stephenson also had to
settle for the runners up berth in the Restricted when long time leader
Paddy Bettalot had insufficient reserves to hold Irilut's challenge over
the final two fences. Sam Waley Cohen had risen at dawn to travel down to
Lambourn in order to school with Mick Fitzgerald in the hope of partnering
his fathers Katarino in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham on Tuesday. Stephenson
finally struck gold in the Mens Open where the Clive Hitchings owned and
Jo Tremain trained Fontaine Again proved too strong in the closing stages
for his chief market rival Cascum Lad.
Alan
Hollingsworth has five Pointers in his Feckenham stable and he scored his
first winner of the season when Star Changes outstayed Southern Cross in
the 3-runner Moderate. NOTED
