| Last Sunday the Border
Hunt staged an entertaining 7 race card at Hexham racecourse.
Highlight of the day was a double for Tom Oates which gives him a
clear lead in the rider’s championship going into the final
meeting in a fortnight.
The double was initiated in the first race when Dun Victory completed a four timer for the season when easily accounting for Flaming Sunrise and Gaultier Gale. The winner was always handy and asserted on the run to 3 out and from then on the issue was never in doubt. Tom completed his double later in the afternoon when partnering the Rhona Brewis trained Timberley to victory in the second division of the Maiden. This one made virtually every yard of the running and won very easily indeed from the staying on Highland Island and Ballyliffen Boy which patently did not stay. The Restricted saw Starbuck under Ran Morgan reverse last weeks form with Be A Better Boy. This one was in the van for most of the way and resisted the persistent challenge of the runner up from 3 out. Riparius and Pauline Robson got up in the shadow of the post to snatch the Ladies race from Jenny Riding and Harden Glen. The runner up was clear over the last but began to tie on the run in and Pauline Robson seized her chance to drive the favourite up. Again it was a case of jockeys winning the race and Robson proved yet again how good she really is. The Men’s race went to Jimmy Walton and Finest Of Men. This one stalked the Yorkshire raider Knight Templar until being set alight on the run to the third last and the issue was soon settled. Knight Templar was hard driven from a long way out but was still a distance clear of Dean Deifer in third. Solway Plain under Dale Jewett confirmed the promise of the previous week when easily taking the first division of the Maiden. This one and runner up Faster Sweep were a long way clear of their rivals throughout the last circuit but the winner was always travelling the better and easily asserted from four out. Capybara ran on strongly to be third and could well land a Maiden here at the final meeting. The Members went to Morag Neill aboard Run On Thyne. The pair won in a canter from Tallaburn although their task was made easier when favourite Marteeny departed on the first circuit. The final meeting of the season is a week on Saturday when the Haydon hold their meeting at Hexham racecourse. First race is scheduled for 1:30 pm. Pointer |
